Area representative

A party paid to help recruit and support franchisees in a region on the franchisor's behalf, without becoming the franchisor to those franchisees.

What it means

An area representative model sits alongside master and sub-franchising. The representative markets the system, helps sign and support franchisees in a territory, and shares in the fees, but the franchise agreements are still with the franchisor, not the representative.

It differs from a sub-franchisor, who actually grants the franchises. The area representative is more of a paid regional support-and-recruitment partner.

In practice

Understand who you are actually contracting with. With an area representative, your agreement is with the franchisor; the representative is your local support, whose responsiveness you should still assess.

A real example

A home-services brand appoints an area representative for regional Queensland to run recruitment and field support, while every franchise agreement remains directly between the franchisor and each franchisee.

Area representative, FAQs

What is an area representative in franchising?

A regional partner paid to recruit and support franchisees on the franchisor's behalf. Unlike a sub-franchisor, they do not grant the franchises, the agreement stays with the franchisor.

How is an area representative different from a master franchisee?

A master franchisee or sub-franchisor is granted rights and appoints franchisees; an area representative supports and recruits but does not hold the franchise grant.
