Information Statement

A short, standard document a franchisor must give a prospective franchisee before anything else, setting out in plain language the risks and rewards of buying a franchise.

What it means

Under the Franchising Code of Conduct, the Information Statement is the very first document you must receive when you formally express interest in a franchise. It is a general, one-size explainer, not specific to the brand, and it exists to make sure no one enters franchising without a baseline understanding of what they are getting into.

It is separate from, and comes before, the disclosure document and the franchise agreement. Think of it as the plain-English warning label on the whole process, prompting you to do your research, get advice, and read the detailed documents that follow.

In practice

Receiving the Information Statement does not start the 14-day disclosure period, that clock runs from when you receive the disclosure document and the proposed agreement. But if a franchisor has not given you the Information Statement early, treat it as a sign their process may be sloppy.

A real example

After enquiring about a cleaning franchise, Priya is emailed the Information Statement first. It reminds her to seek independent legal and accounting advice and to speak with existing franchisees, which she does before the franchisor sends the full disclosure document a week later.

Information Statement, FAQs

Is the Information Statement the same as the disclosure document?

No. The Information Statement is a short, general plain-language overview given first. The disclosure document is the detailed, brand-specific record you receive at least 14 days before signing.

When must I receive the Information Statement?

As soon as it becomes apparent you are a prospective franchisee, before the disclosure document. It is one of the first obligations a franchisor owes you under the Code.
