Mystery shopping
What it means
Mystery shopping (or secret shopping) is a common franchisor tool for monitoring quality. An assessor visits incognito, buys or experiences the service, and scores the outlet against defined standards.
Results can feed into performance reviews, support priorities, and occasionally compliance action. For franchisees, it is both a check and a source of useful, customer-eye feedback.
In practice
Treat mystery-shop results as free feedback on the customer experience. Understand how your system uses them, whether they affect your standing, and use them to fix real gaps.
A real example
A fast-food franchisor runs quarterly mystery shops; a franchisee uses a low score on order accuracy to retrain staff, lifting the next visit's result and, with it, repeat custom.
