Training fee

A charge, sometimes separate from the initial franchise fee, covering the franchisor's initial training of a new franchisee and their staff.

What it means

Most systems provide initial training on operations, systems and brand standards. Some bundle its cost into the initial franchise fee; others charge a separate training fee, and may charge again for training additional staff or refresher courses.

Because training can be a meaningful line item, it is worth isolating in the cost breakdown rather than assuming it is included.

In practice

Check the disclosure document for whether training is included or charged separately, how many people it covers, and whether travel and accommodation for off-site training are your cost.

A real example

A café franchisor includes two weeks of training for the owner in the initial fee but charges a $1,500 training fee for each additional manager the franchisee sends.

Training fee, FAQs

Is training included in the franchise fee?

It varies. Some franchisors include initial training in the initial fee; others charge a separate training fee and may charge extra for additional staff or refresher training. Check the disclosure document.

What costs come with franchise training?

Beyond any training fee, budget for travel, accommodation and lost trading time if the training is off-site or before your outlet opens.
