Franchise training and support: what to really expect

Support is a big part of what your royalties pay for. Before you sign, find out whether it is real and ongoing, or a strong start followed by silence.

What training and support should a franchise provide?

A good franchisor provides initial training on operations, systems and brand standards before you open, then ongoing support: field visits and coaching, marketing, supply arrangements, technology, and help when something goes wrong. The quality varies enormously between systems, and the sales pitch always sounds supportive, so the real test is what existing franchisees say they actually receive, not what the brochure promises.

Initial vs ongoing support

  • Initial training: operations, systems, brand standards and launch, usually before you open (check whether it is included in the initial fee or charged separately).
  • Ongoing support: field managers or business development managers who visit and coach, national marketing, supplier and technology support, and problem escalation.

Ongoing support is what you pay royalties for over the whole term, so it matters more than the initial training in the long run.

How to tell real support from a promise

  1. Ask how many outlets each field manager supports and how often they visit.
  2. Ask current franchisees whether the support is genuinely useful or just a compliance check.
  3. Ask former franchisees whether support fell away after the sale.
  4. Check what the agreement actually commits the franchisor to provide, versus what is merely described.
The pattern to watch for: strong help while you are being sold and set up, then silence once the fees are flowing. Former franchisees will tell you if that is the culture.

Frequently asked questions

What support do franchisees actually get?

It varies by system: initial training before opening, then ongoing field coaching, marketing, supply and technology support. The reliable way to know is to ask current and former franchisees what they actually receive.

Is franchise training included in the fee?

Sometimes. Some franchisors include initial training in the initial fee; others charge a separate training fee, and may charge for additional staff. Check the disclosure document.

How do I judge a franchisor's support before buying?

Ask how many outlets each field manager covers and how often they visit, check what the agreement commits to, and, most importantly, ask current and former franchisees whether the support is real.
