Technology fee
What it means
Modern franchises run on shared technology, POS, booking, ordering and reporting systems. A technology fee (sometimes called a software or IT fee) covers access to and support for these platforms, usually charged monthly or as a percentage.
It is a recurring cost separate from royalty and marketing levy, and it can rise over time as systems are upgraded, so it belongs in your ongoing-cost model.
In practice
Ask what the technology fee covers, whether it is fixed or variable, and how often it changes. Confirm whether hardware (terminals, tablets) is an additional up-front cost.
A real example
A fitness franchise charges a $220 monthly technology fee for its member-management and billing platform, on top of the royalty, a cost the franchisee builds into monthly overheads.
